Qi Relaxation Exercise 2

Shoulders up and down qi exercise.

Shoulders Up and Down

The shoulders are often the real villains in a bad posture, and the consequences of it. A bad posture does in itself cause tense shoulders, and the other way around, but there are many things that can create unnecessary tension in the shoulders. The following exercise is a way of countering the tension that shoulders can have, even if they are straight and the posture is good.

The life energy qi (also chi or ki) explained, with several very easy exercises to awaken, increase, and use it. Click the image to see the book at Amazon (paid link).

How to do it

  1. You can make this exercise standing up as well as sitting, but not lying down. I recommend that you close your eyes.

  2. With your arms along the sides of your body, pull your shoulders as high up as you can, so that they almost touch the ears. Do it at the same time as you inhale through your nose. Your arms should still hang loosely, and your hands should be open and inactive.

  3. Let your shoulders suddenly fall down at the same time as you exhale through your mouth.

  4. Repeat. You can continue with this exercise as long as you feel that it makes the shoulders relax more.

Note that this should be done after the exercise with the hands clenching and opening. If they are done in the reverse order, there is a risk that the exercise with the hands counters the result of the shoulder exercise.
