Qi Relaxation Exercise 1

Clench-Open qi exercise.

Clench and Open

Here you focus on the hands. They are almost constantly at work, so it can be difficult to relax them enough to be pleasantly soft and supple. When the hands are active, not only all the muscles from the wrist out to the fingertips are used, but also a number of muscles along the arms, up to the shoulders – sometimes also muscles on the back. But you do not have to think about that. Concentrate on your hands, and the rest will take care of itself.

How to do it

  1. You can make this exercise standing or sitting, but it does not work as well if you are lying down. You should close your eyes, to feel more clearly what happens in your muscles, and not to be distracted by the surroundings.

  2. With your arms along the sides of your body, clench your fists as hard as you can, at the same time as you inhale through your nose. Also the muscles of your arms and shoulders will contract, which is good.

  3. Open your hands suddenly and relax them, at the same time as you exhale through your mouth.

  4. Do it again. Once is never... You can continue as long as you notice a difference in how your hands, arms, and shoulders feel when they relax.

When the hands feel really soft and supple, and the arms hang down lazily, you are well on your way. This actually helps many other parts of the body to relax, since the hands are involved in most things you do. When they rest, a substantial portion of the body does the same.
