Qi Extension Exercise 2

Pointing qi exercise.

Point

This exercise is essentially identical to the former one. It is just another body part involved. Actually a combination of two: the eyes, like before, and the index finger. But the latter has the main role here. The role of the eyes is little more than to observe how the exercise works. They can also help to intensify the experience, as well as your ability to focus.

How to do it

  1. Just like in the previous exercise, you should stand or sit, but not lie down. Apart from that, there are no restrictions.

  2. Aim at a spot in front of you – at least some ten feet away, but it works better if the spot you choose is far away. Make sure to decide exactly on a precise spot.

  3. Close your eyes and start a good qi breathing. You should feel that the breathing and the qi flow work well, before you continue to the next step.

  4. Begin a slow exhalation through your nose. Open your eyes when you feel that your exhalation flows steadily, and gaze right at the spot you have chosen.

  5. Continuing your exhalation, extend your arm and point with your index finger at the spot. Your index finger should be aimed at the spot well before your exhalation ends. Continue to point while you exhale. You can continue also with the feeling of exhalation without air, described in the exercise on breathing in a square, if you can do that with conviction.

  6. Before the feeling of exhalation weakens, close your eyes and lower your arm. It is important that you halt while your exhalation still feels strong.

  7. Once is never. Take a few deep and calm breaths, and then repeat the exercise. Remember to halt before your feeling of exhaling weakens.

  8. Continue as long as you feel that you improve, but interrupt immediately if your experience of the exercise weakens or gets vague. It should feel like you are breathing out through your index finger, in a flow toward the spot you aim at. That is qi flowing through your finger. When it feels as if the finger somehow reaches the spot, so that you can almost sense it on the tip of your finger, then you manage this exercise very well.

When you repeat this exercise it is good to choose different spots to aim at. Otherwise you might become too self-conscious, or you start doing it indifferently, like a routine.

Pointing is a simple and clear example of how qi relates to human action and perception. You gather your qi, thereby also your attention, in order to aim it in a specific direction or at a certain spot. Certainly, this is a form of concentration, but it is important to understand that it involves no strain or tension. This concentration is quite relaxed and natural. Still it is both effective and sharp.

You will notice that this way of fixing your eyes and finger on a specific spot makes you develop your mental ability to focus, to be concentrated on one thing at a time – without needing to strain yourself. You can also sort of point at more abstract or complex things, such as tasks and goals at work, actually even relations to other people. That way you can handle them with a clearer mind.
